Hanukkah Oil Candles

Best Hanukkah Oil Candles on Amazon

Hanukkah oil candles bring the holiday back to its roots. The festival celebrates the miracle of a single day’s oil that burned for eight nights, so lighting with oil rather than wax is a meaningful way to mark each evening. The good news is that you no longer need to measure out oil and fiddle with loose wicks. Today’s Hanukkah oil candles come pre-filled in glass cups, in jelled olive oil form, and as simple floating wick sets, so you can light the menorah in minutes. We have gathered the best Hanukkah oil candles on Amazon in one place, from ready-to-light cups to the wicks and cups you need to fill your own. Whether you are lighting for the first time, setting up a menorah for a whole family, or looking for a tidy way to celebrate in a dorm or apartment, you will find an easy option below. You will also find a short guide to how many lights you need, how to light them safely, and answers to the questions we hear most often.

Pre-filled cups are the most popular style of Hanukkah oil candle, and it is easy to see why. The oil, cup and wick are already together, so there is nothing to measure, spill or clean up before you light. We chose three different looks: a full-holiday Ohr Lights pack, clear olive oil glass cups for a traditional feel, and Ner Mitzvah’s colored oil for families who like a splash of color on the menorah. These are lighting products rather than food, so there is no kosher certification to check, but it is always worth reading each listing to confirm what is included and the burn time. A pack that covers all eight nights makes setup simple, because you will need 44 lights across the holiday once the shamash is counted.

If you prefer the traditional approach, a menorah set up with your own oil is a rewarding way to light. Jelled olive oil keeps the olive oil connection while avoiding loose liquid, which suits families with curious children and busy tables. Floating wicks and oil cups are the building blocks for the classic method: fill each cup with oil, float a wick on top and light. Many families like to use olive oil for its association with the Hanukkah story, although other oils can also be used, so check with your rabbi if you are unsure. Always follow the instructions that come with each product, and keep a close eye on the lights while they burn.

Every Hanukkah table looks better with a few personal touches. Alongside the Amazon picks above, we design our own Hanukkah products and sell them in our Etsy shop, so you can add something made just for the holiday to your home or your gift list. They are original designs created for The Kosher Hub, and they are a good match for the evening ritual of lighting the menorah with family and friends. Oil is not the only way to light the menorah, and a box of wax candles is a sensible backup if you are traveling or lighting in more than one place. Candles fit the standard hanukkiah, which makes them the simplest choice for most households. Choosing a mix is perfectly fine: some families light oil at home and keep candles for visits to relatives. Color is a matter of taste, so pick whatever suits your table.

Hanukkah candle lighting blessing card — free printable from The Kosher Hub

🕯️ Hanukkah Candle Blessing

Ready to light? Our free Hanukkah candle blessing card gives you the blessings in Hebrew, transliteration and English, so everyone at the table can join in. Print it and keep it beside your menorah.

📖 How to Light Hanukkah Oil Candles

How many you need, the lighting order, and safety basics.

How many lights do you need? Over eight nights you light one light on the first night, two on the second, and so on up to eight, which makes 36 lights. Add one shamash (helper light) each night and you need 44 in total. This is why so many oil candle packs are sold in sets of 44.

The lighting order. Place the lights in the menorah from right to left, then light them from left to right, kindling the newest light first. Use the shamash to light the others. Say the blessings before you light, which is where our free blessing card above comes in handy.

When to light. Hanukkah lights are traditionally lit at nightfall and should burn for a good while afterwards. Check the burn time listed for your oil candles to make sure they will last long enough, and ask your rabbi if you have questions about timing, particularly on Fridays before Shabbat.

Safety. Place the menorah on a stable, heatproof surface away from curtains, paper and decorations, and out of reach of children and pets. Never leave burning lights unattended, and keep a fire-safe way of putting them out close by. Pre-filled cups and jelled oil are tidy, but they still hold a real flame.

❓ Hanukkah Oil Candles: Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you light.

What are Hanukkah oil candles?

Hanukkah oil candles are lights that burn oil instead of wax. They come as pre-filled cups, jelled olive oil, or oil and floating wicks that you assemble yourself, and they are used to light the menorah on each night of Hanukkah.

Why do people light Hanukkah candles with oil?

Oil connects directly to the Hanukkah story of the Temple oil that lasted eight nights. Many families like to use olive oil for that reason, although wax candles are also widely used and are perfectly acceptable.

How many Hanukkah oil candles do I need?

You need 44 lights for the whole holiday. That is 36 lights for the eight nights plus one shamash (helper light) each night. Many oil candle sets are sold in packs of 44 for this reason.

Is olive oil the only oil you can use?

Olive oil is the traditional choice and is preferred by many. Other oils can also be used, but if you want guidance on what is best for your household, ask your local rabbi.

How long should Hanukkah lights burn?

Traditionally the lights should burn for a period after nightfall. Check the burn time on the product listing for the oil candles you choose, and ask your rabbi if you have questions about timing.

Are Hanukkah oil candles safe to use at home?

They are safe when used carefully. Keep the menorah on a stable, heatproof surface away from anything flammable, keep children and pets away, and never leave a lit flame unattended.

Can I use oil cups in any menorah?

Not always. Many menorahs are designed for wax candles, so check that the holders will fit your oil cups, or look for a menorah made for oil. If it does not fit, you can place the oil lights on a heatproof tray instead.

What are floating wicks and how do they work?

Floating wicks are small wicks that sit on top of the oil in a cup. You fill the cup with oil, place a wick on the surface and light it. Follow the instructions on the product packaging.
