🕎 Understanding the Jewish Holiday Calendar
Why the dates move every year, and how the holidays fit together.
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Jewish calendar is lunisolar — each month follows the roughly 29.5-day cycle of the moon, while an extra leap month is added in seven of every nineteen years to keep the holidays anchored to their correct season. That's why Passover always falls in spring and Sukkot always falls in autumn, even though the secular date shifts from year to year. Each Jewish day also begins at sundown rather than midnight, which is why every holiday "begins the evening before" the date most calendars list.
The Jewish holidays generally fall into a few groups. The three pilgrimage festivals — Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot — mark the agricultural seasons and Israel's journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the High Holidays, form the Ten Days of Repentance that open the new year. Hanukkah and Purim commemorate historical deliverances and are observed with less restriction on daily activity than the biblical festivals. Fast days like Tisha B'Av mark national tragedies, while Tu Bishvat and Lag B'Omer are lighter, more minor observances.
