Shabbat starts at sundown every Friday night and lasts until one hour after sundown on Saturday

What is Shabbat in a nutshell?

Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest and is observed every week from sunset on Friday until nightfall on Saturday. It is considered one of the most important and central mitzvot (commandments) in Judaism, and is observed by Jews all over the world.

During Shabbat, Jews refrain from work and engage in activities that promote rest, relaxation, and spiritual reflection. This includes attending synagogue services, reading and studying sacred texts, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying festive meals.

The observance of Shabbat is based on the Biblical account of the creation of the world, in which God rested on the seventh day. It is considered a time for renewal, both of the individual soul and of the larger community, and is a symbol of the covenant between God and the Jewish people.

Overall, Shabbat is a day of rest and spiritual renewal, as well as a time to connect with family, community, and tradition. It is a central component of Jewish life and is a reminder of the importance of balance, reflection, and gratitude in one’s spiritual and personal life.
