Rosh Hashanah 22-24 September 2025
What is Rosh Hashanah in a nutshell?
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, which marks the beginning of the High Holy Days, a ten-day period of repentance and reflection that culminates in Yom Kippur. The holiday usually falls in September or October and is celebrated on the first two days of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar.
During Rosh Hashanah, Jews attend synagogue services and participate in special prayers and rituals, including the blowing of the shofar, a hollowed-out ram’s horn. The holiday is also marked by festive meals with family and friends, and the eating of symbolic foods, such as apples dipped in honey, to represent hopes for a sweet new year.
Rosh Hashanah is a time for introspection, repentance, and renewal, as well as a time to reflect on one’s relationships with God and others. It is also a time to ask for forgiveness and to make amends for past wrongdoings, in preparation for the solemn Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. Overall, Rosh Hashanah is a significant holiday in the Jewish calendar, serving as a reminder of the importance of reflection, gratitude, and renewal in one’s spiritual life.
